About the Speaker

Mary joined Georgian College in 1987 as a Professor of Psychology and Sociology.  In 1993, while working towards her Masters of Education, Mary became Georgian’s first Prior Learning Assessment Facilitator, which provided mature students the opportunity to return to college and receive credit for life and work experience.  Involved in curriculum development throughout her career at Georgian College, Mary has acted as the program coordinator for the General Education, Social Sciences and the Environmental Programs.

In 1999 Mary was nominated for the University of Toronto’s Distinguished Educator Award and in 2007 she received the Teaching Excellence Award.   She is known as a strong advocate for teaching and learning, and for possessing a strong sense of social justice.  On March 2, 2009 Mary assumed the role of Dean at the Orillia campus of Georgian College.

Outside of Georgian College, Mary is well known for her work as an environmentalist.  She led a three-year environmental project in the Orillia area that gained provincial and national remark.  The advocacy of this project contributed to the unanimous passing of the Lake Simcoe Protection Resolution in the provincial legislature.  These achievements earned Mary the Provincial Green Diva award.

Mary has been an active volunteer in the Orillia community since she moved here in 1984.  Encouraging fundraising within the community and the College, Mary shaved her head in May, 2009 during the Cops for Cancer fundraiser to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society.  In February, 2010, Mary challenged the students and staff of Georgian College to raise as much money as possible and took the plunge in the Orillia Winter Carnival’s annual Polar Bear Dip in Lake Couchiching.  Mary continues to support many worthy community causes.
